Marvel Legends: Pernicious Packaging Problems Persist!

As I’m sure is quite evident by now, I am an avid collector of Marvel Legends! I’ve been doing so for years, and my collection is quite sizable. I have a pretty good idea of how and where to find these figures, as well as the risks of collecting. One of these risks is swapping, when someone purchases a figure, swaps it out for another one (usually old or undesirable), and then returns it to the store. The employees often don’t know any better, especially if it’s similar enough, and they accept the return, thus the swapper gets brand new figures for free.
Recently, Jay Cochran of Marvelous News reached out to me about a story he’s doing on figure swapping (you can check that out right here). He’d seen a picture I posted on Reddit, and wanted to use it. I gave him permission to do so, and I feel like I should tell the full story. This is how it all went down, True Believers.
Over the years I’ve seen my fair share of swaps. Some of them were so close it almost fooled me, others it was painfully obvious (to me, at least, since I’ve been doing this for so long). However, I could always see it before I bought it, allowing me to turn it in and attempt to find the figure elsewhere. Well, not anymore. Hasbro, the guys that make Marvel Legends, have switched the way they package their figures to be completely plastic free. Where there once was a transparent plastic window allowing you to clearly see what was inside, has now been replaced with cold, hard cardboard.

They say it’s better for the environment, and I’m sure it is. But it’s also better for the group of lovely individuals I mentioned earlier: Swappers. And I fell victim to it. Hasbro has just released a Spider-Man 2-Pack that includes him and Spinneret inspired by the Renew Your Vows comic run. People in my circles were finding them in Target, so I decided to try my luck. Imagine my joy when I found one sitting on the shelf, first Target I went into! I was so excited! I preorder all of these figures online, but when I find them in the wild, I cancel my preorder and enjoy my new figure! So I rushed to the register, checked out, and began examining my new item in the car! That’s when I noticed the tape looked kind of weird, dirty, like it had been peeled and replaced. Not good, was my initial thought, so I decided to scrap a potential unboxing video just to make sure everything was on the up and up. I opened up the package, and…

Devastated. All of that joy and happiness from finding the brand new figure on the shelf was gone in an instant. I always got a sinking feeling in my heart when I thought I found the figure in a store only to notice that it was a swap. But this time, I had made the purchase. I spent my money, I made it into my vehicle. This time, it was personal. (I know, I’m dramatic).
I marched back into the Target, over to guest services, and explained to the woman. I told her how I’d just bought it, but something told me to check, and showed her what I found. I explained that this was the new packaging for Marvel Legends going forward, and that this was about to be a nightmare for collectors. She seemed to genuinely care (trust me, I’ve seen their reaction when they don’t) and suggested honestly that I check the box before I even leave the store. Of course, I still very much wanted the figures, you all know how much I love Spider-Man and Mary Jane (and if not, well, now you do!) So I asked if she had anymore. She said they didn’t, but gave me two Targets nearby that did, one closer to me that had one, and one a bit further that had four. So I thanked her, and set off.
I made my way to the closer Target, in the same city, and went straight to the toys. Sure enough, there was one sitting on the shelf. But on this one, the tape was completely missing. So I went to the nearest employee, explained my experience at the previous Target, and asked if I could check. He told me guest services had the final say, so I walked over there, explained what was up, and the girl said she could open it for me. She did, and then gasped in surprise. Same thing, WWE figures. So that tells me that it was the same loser. This time I wasn’t disappointed. I was angry! I swore I would destroy this guy! Target girl probably thought I was crazy, but it didn’t matter. This was no longer about right and wrong, this was about vengeance! (I know, I’m dramatic).
So I left that one there, having saved anther hapless collector from being duped, and made it to the further Target. There weren’t any on the shelf, but I saw the label. So I used the Target app and scanned it, got the DCPI, and asked a nice lady in the aisle if she could check for me. (Target app and DCPI numbers are very helpful! Use both to their full advantage!) She said that they had four in the back and went to get one for me. She emerged shortly and handed it to me, brand new, in tact, and beautiful! I thanked her gratuitously, and checked out! I did open it in the car (the new packaging also prevents inspecting the figures for quality control issues, so that’s a whole other problem) but finally, 3 Targets later, I had my figures!

Let this serve as a cautionary tale, True Believers. Hasbro seems dead set on this packaging, and as long as their only security option is a flimsy piece of scotch tape, we need to remain vigilant. So look out for each other. This is the fight of our lives. And we’re gonna win. Whatever it takes. (I know, I’m dramatic).
So that’s it, the full story behind the swap. Be careful out there fellow collectors! I’ll keep you updated if hopefully something changes in terms of Hasbro’s packaging. Until then, Face Front True Believers, and I’ll see you in the Multiverse!

Hey there True Believers! Spider-Man Day is the best day of the year, because I just go all out on Spidey! I celebrated with several videos on Face Front’s YouTube channel, and the first one revolves around this unique new addition to my collection.

Spider-Man Trilogy Collection

With Spider-Man: No Way Home finally coming to Blu-Ray (even though I was a sucker and bought it on digital first) I have now finally completed my “Homecoming Trilogy” Blu-Ray collection! I’m so happy about it, in fact, that I’m going to share the editions of each movie I have with you True Believers! Let’s get started!
Spider-Man Homecoming

This version of Homecoming was a Target exclusive. It’s a really cool cover that folds out into a display that looks like the inside of Peter’s notebook. It’s got drawings of the spider symbol, Winter Soldier’s arm, the web fluid formula, you name it!

This version also came with an exclusive comic book! It’s about Peter trying to get partnered up in class with a girl named Amy (it’s not Liz for some reason) but then cop cars zoom by, so Peter bails to stop Shocker!

He and Droney take Shocker down, but Peter gets detention for skipping class. Poor Peter. I love my copy of Homecoming, it just feels special with all of the amazing little details they included in the box art.
Spider-Man: Far From Home

This version of Far From Home was a Walmart exclusive that came with what they call a ‘Throwbaction Action Figure’. They also did one of these for the first Venom and Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse (both of which I own, of course!)

The only thing that upset me about this is that I couldn’t see the card when I bought it, and it turns out it was bent! Anyone following me for even a short amount of time knows that I pretty much open all of my figures, but for the select few I want to keep boxed up, it’s really annoying when something happens to the packaging.

But other than that slight misfortune, I am really happy with my little collectible Night Monkey figure. Best version of Far From Home on the shelves (at the time).
Spider-Man: No Way Home

I had several, difficult options for this one (the first two movies were kind of no-brainers with literally no competition) but I settled on the version with the Walmart exclusive cover art. Underneath the slip case is the standard cover, which I’m actually fine with because I dig that cover as well.

So no foldout, no retro action figure, but still, I’m just glad to have the movie in my physical collection at long last. The exclusive art is also such a powerful image, and I really wanted that in my collection. I wish the 4K would have used the Green Goblin version of that poser, being that he was the more prominent villain, but otherwise, no complaints.
So, which version of No Way Home did you get? Which versions of the first two do you have? Let me know in the comments below. Maybe show it off on Face of the Fan! That’s all for now, until next time, Face Front True Believers, and I’ll see you in the Multiverse!

Face of the Fan

↓ Scroll Down to see the Gallery! ↓
The Story
Way back in 2007 when Spider-Man 3 was coming out, there was a contest called “Face of the Fan”. Spider-Man fans across the world had to submit a video explaining why they were Spidey fans, and the two winners would go on to become the official spokespeople for promotional videos before the movie’s release. I remembering entering, not winning, then being envious of the guy and girl that did win. Yes, the marketing campaign for Spider-Man 3 was a fun one.
Now, I’m not just going on a trip down memory lane here. I, Joshua Westbrook, am bringing Face of the Fan back! Face Front style! (And yes, I considered calling it Face Front of the Fan. You can see how that’s a syntax nightmare.) The thing is, I’m doing it a little differently. In Face Front’s Face of the Fan, EVERYONE wins! I don’t want anyone to feel the crushing disappointment I did 15 years ago, so I’m creating a fan experience that you all can participate in! It’s time for you to Face Front True Believers!
Instructions
It’s very simple. Watch this video or read below. Three steps:
1: Take a picture of the most prized item in your Marvel collection (comic book, action figure, plushie, pillow, whatever! It’s your most prized item!)
2: Email the picture with your name (First and last, or first, or last, or your Face Front username if you want, even a social media handle*, just something I can call you), the name of the item, and a brief description of why the item is the centerpiece of your collection to mail@FaceFrontBlog.com.
3: I will post the picture, your name, the item name, and the description below! Then you can browse the gallery of everyone’s most prized Marvel possessions! You can even leave comments below to let someone know if theirs is your favorite!
That’s it! It’s super easy. It’s actually only 2 steps since I do step 3! So what are you waiting for? Take a picture, send an email, and you will be Face Front’s next Face of the Fan!
*Please specify which social media platform your handle is for so that I can properly link it.

Joshua Westbrook – Stan Lee Signed Copy of Amazing Fantasy #15

Amazing Fantasy #15 is Spider-Man’s first appearance in comic book history, releasing in August of 1962. I pulled this copy of the comic out of a ToyBiz Marvel Legends action figure, and my friend Kyle got it signed by none other than the man who wrote it, Stan Lee!
BigJSpider (YouTube) – Marvel Legends Spider-Man Upgraded Suit

This is my favourite item in my collection because it’s an action figure of one of my favourite Tom Holland Spider-Man suits from Spider-Man: No Way Home, my favourite movie.
Poke (Twitter) – Spider-Man Figure Collection

These are my most prized Spider-Man items.
Lewis Nestman – Face of the Future

This young fan sure has a cute face! And though he grew out of his marvel onesies he still enjoys his books, toys, shirt, and socks…but his hulk socks seem to be missing.
Eileen Nestman (YouTube) – Agent Carter-Verse

In an unforgiving world that wants you to pick between two equally bad options I stand with Peggy and create my own path because I know my value.
Amahl Dunbar – Iron Banner

I’ve been painting some action figures to post to social media for Halloween & movie premieres like Cap: Brave New World. I bought a Spawn figure & painted him to look like a Hulk Buster/ Hulk variant. For now, I call him ‘Iron Banner.’

Ms. Marvel for Every Occasion!
I have three Ms. Marvel figures! I love Ms. Marvel! She’s great! Kamala has definitely made an impression in her very short time in the Marvel Universe. So, I decided to take my three Ms. Marvel figures, and create a collage! Ladies and gentlemen, I present to you, Ms. Marvel for Every Occasion!

Now I know what you’re all wondering. Joshua, how did you assemble such a magnificent Ms. Marvel menagerie? Well I’m glad you asked True Believer, and I’m happy to walk you through it! Go ahead, scroll on!

Now, we begin our little hodgepodge of heroine heroics with a classic comic Ms. Marvel and her idol, Carol Danvers, aka Captain Marvel! (Who sorely needs an updated comic Marvel Legend! I mean, look at her!) When posing the OG Ms. Marvel fig, Carol was the obvious, and only choice, to put by her side!

Next we’ve got Kamala spearheading the Avengers, Iron Man and Captain America to be precise, in their Iconic costumes from Marvel’s Avengers video game! That’s right, Kamala basically took charge as the lead character in a AAA Avengers blockbuster game! Didn’t I tell you, she’s made quite the splash in the Marvel U! And the Gamerverse Marvel Legends (Here’s to hoping they, you know, round out the team!) were the perfect trio for this middle shot.

And lastly, we have her poised with Peter Parker in a partnership that pales to no other pair! With the exclusive Marvel Unlimited Marvel Legends Ms. Marvel figure (I did that on purpose) sporting her Spider-Man themed burqini! In the issue I’ve placed behind them, Marvel Team-Up (2019) #2, Peter and Kamala have actually switched bodies! They didn’t wear each other’s get-ups in the mag, but it made for some pretty unique cover art! I used the retro Legends Peter Parker with the “Spider-Sense” head because it was pretty close to how Pete actually looks on the cover!
So, after the posing, the shots, a little Photoshop, ‘borrowing’ the Ms. Marvel logo from the upcoming Disney+ show (Because Disney+ has ever so conveniently made their title logos very draggable PNG’s!) I came up with this masterpiece! Hope you enjoy it! I sure did! Anyways, thanks for checking out this post. If you want to see me unbox 2 of the 3 figs in here, see the below videos. Other than that, Face Front True Believers, and I’ll see you in the Multiverse!

Marvel Legends Spider-Man Vintage Wave Showcase
Hello there True Believers! No, your eyes do not decieve you! Marvel Legends, these may be, but this is no mere unboxing! Oh no, most certainly not. The loyal denizens of Face Front Blog deserve much more respect than that!
So, without further delay, I present to you the first (of what I hope to be many) Marvel Legends Showcase! I shelled out top dollar for a rotating display stand (20 bones to be exact!) so that you could view the latest Marvel Legends from Hasbro at all angles!
So dive in to the video above! Unless you already have, in which case… watch it again! And again, and again True Believers, because this was such an excellent wave of Marvel Legends! Hasbro has outdone themselves this time, and if this is any indication of upcoming vintage wave figs, then bring ’em on! (Anybody catch the Doctor Doom reveal!?)
Well, that’s all for me, enjoy the vid! I was sure to include all kinds of copyrighted Spider-Man music so you wouldn’t get too bored watching toys spin in a circle for 16 minutes! Maybe I’ll do them one at a time from now on… Face Front True Believers, and I’ll see you in the Multiverse!

Marvel Legends Deluxe Black Widow
I got my hands on a Marvel Legends Deluxe Black Widow figure! Sporting her white suit from the Marvel’s Black Widow film (now releasing November 6), this version of Natasha is nothing to mess around with! She’s got tons of accessories, and the featured item, a stand!
Hasbro has gone above and beyond with this figure, and the stand with all of the effects is certainly something that adds flare to 1 of 4 Black Widow figures released in this movie tie-in wave of Marvel Legends. I hope they continue to do things like this. After all, if a Deluxe figure isn’t going to be mega-sized like Monster Venom, then something is needed to justify the value!
That’s it for this figure! Face Front True Believers, and I’ll see you in the Multiverse!

Toys to Comics: VENOMIZED #1
In honor of us getting the full title for the Venom sequel, now officially called Venom: Let There be Carnage, I decided to do Face Front’s second ever Toys to Comics featuring Carnage and Venom!

This cover is a variant of Venomized #1 (2018) by Kalman Andrasofszky. It was made for C2E2 and apparently there’s only 3,000 of them. I’m lucky enough to own one! Since this cover prominently features both Carnage and Venom, I thought it’d be a fun one to bring to life using none other than Hasbro’s Marvel Legends!

I used the recently released Monster Venom Deluxe Figure because he seems more appropriate size-wise the way he’s represented on this cover. The Carnage is actually the one from the 2014 Amazing Spider-Man 2 Ultimate Goblin wave. Mostly because my Monster Venom wave Carnage had the Kletus Cassidy head and the axe hand and I wasn’t trying to dig out the correct pieces!
The Spider-Man head in the background is actually a giant inflatable Infinity War Iron Spider! It was the biggest Spider-Man head I had, and my cloud pillow just looked awkward… Pretty neat, right? Right?? Don’t judge me!
So there you have it! Let there be Carnage! That’s it for now! Face Front True Believers, and I’ll see you in the Multiverse!

Marvel Legends Squirrel Girl Unbeatable Unboxing!
Something UNBEATABLE this way comes! Check out the unboxing video for Hasbro’s Marvel Legends Squirrel Girl! There’s also a gallery down below!
I personally think Squirrel Girl is long overdue for the Marvel Legends treatment, and she’s certainly a great figure! The scooter bike adds just the right amount of fun and levity to such an optimistic character. I love the Marvel Legends Riders wave, and Doreen here is definitely a great addition!
Have you picked up your Squirrel Girl yet? If not, you can get her on Hasbro Pulse! Comment down below where she fits in your Marvel Legends collection! That’s all for now, Face Front True Believers, and I’ll see you in the Multiverse!
