And here it is next to the Marvel’s Spider-Man Limited Edition PS4 Pro.

  • I Met Miles Morales!

    I Met Miles Morales!

Well, I met the voice of Miles Morales. Nadji Jeter, who voices Miles in both Marvel’s Spider-Man and Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales, was at the Game On Expo in Phoenix this past weekend.

He’s also done Miles in the 2017 Spider-Man show, a few other games (including Ultimate Alliance 3) and will voice him once more in the upcoming and highly anticipated Marvel’s Spider-Man 2! And I got to meet him!

That’s me, with him. He’s obviously the one that actually looks cool. I told him that I’ve been watching him since back in the 2017 show and that he’s the voice I hear when I read Miles comics. I mean, no disrespect to Shamiek Moore, but Nadji’s been on Miles longer and more often, so I’ve had more exposure to his version of the character. He seemed very appreciative of my praise!

That’s not all though, Marvelites! I had him sign the front of my copy of Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales! The art side, because that looks cooler. And then, unprovoked, he said “Lemme see your phone!” And signed my phone case too! I mean, I can never use it again because I have to preserve it now, but I needed a new case anyways!

After that he had a panel at the expo with Daisuke Tsuji, the voice of Jin from Ghosts of Tsushima. I let them know I did voice acting on my channel and asked how to improve (because I’m always looking for ways to make the vids better for you guys!) I explained that I sometimes struggle with consistency, and I’ll have a perfect take and then another that’s trash.

Daisuke told me that voice acting is just a form of acting, so to improve my base acting skills will also improve my VO skills. Nadji said he was gonna blow my mind, then told me that sometimes the trash takes are the ticket! He said there were takes he did that he thought sucked but everyone outside of the booth loved. He said not to be so hard on myself and to keep going!

There were a lot of interesting facts revealed on the panel. The first scans for Miles were done in Serbia!? Nadji is currently listening to the same thing I am, Metro Boomin’s Spider-Verse soundtrack. He kept saying they got something real good coming for us on October 20th (the release date for Marvel’s Spider-Man 2). He’s really excited about that. His favorite character to voice is Miles. His favorite character in his game was Phin. His favorite scene from the first game was when Spider-Man taught Miles how to fight. And the hardest scene for him to do was after Jefferson Davis died in the first game, because he had to act out being sad about the death of his father, but unfortunately Nadji never had that father figure. So instead he thought about his (thankfully still alive) uncle.

I had so much fun, and I’m so glad I got to meet him, get his autograph (twice) and hear about stories from his voice acting adventures as Miles Morales! I can’t wait to see what he’s so excited about in the next game! Can it be October yet!? That’s it for now, Face Front True Believers, and I’ll see you in the Multiverse!

  • Spider-Man: Web-Warriors Episode 2: Spider-Man Miles Morales

    Spider-Man: Web-Warriors Episode 2: Spider-Man Miles Morales

Close out the 10th Anniversary of Miles Morales with the next installment of Web-Warriors! While Spidey is gone, Miles takes up the responsibility of finding the next candidate for the Web-Warriors. Little does he know that he’s about to come face-to-face with another Miles Morales!

I wanted to close the year with a tribute to Miles since this is his 10th Anniversary. In a previous video, I laid out my history with the character. I feel close to him, and I was all too proud to make a video where Miles meets Miles! In a world where we’ve seen several versions of Peter Parker interact, I thought it would be unique to see what Miles thinks of himself from another universe!

This being the Gamerverse Miles Morales, of course I included several little Easter eggs that anyone who has played the game will surely pick up on!

    Nuform

Miles states that he saved the city from an unstable Nuform reactor. Fans of the game will recognize this as the dangerous substance being exploited by Simon Krieger to power Roxxon Plaza. Before that particular reactor exploded, Miles was able to absorb the energy and release it high above the city.

    The Tinkerer

Miles’s friend Phin Mason was Insomniac Games’ version of the terrible Tinkerer. With high-tech weapons and an army of followers called the Underground at her disposal, the Tinkerer wrecked havoc on Harlem in an all-out war with Roxxon. Luckily, as stated in the video, Miles was able to stop her, though it cost him his friend.

    Chase of Goose

In the first Marvel’s Spider-Man PS4 game, there were some levels where you played as Miles before he had his Spidey-powers. One of these was a terrifying game of hide-and-seek with the Rhino! Rhino, annoyed that he couldn’t find you (if you were good at the game) stated that he hated the “chase of goose”. So in Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales, I guess Miles remembered this because he brought it up to rile up Rhino, just like in the video!

    Harlem

Yes, traditionally Miles is from Brooklyn. But in the game, after his father died in the events of Marvel’s Spider-Man, Rio moved herself and Miles back to her hometown of Harlem. Miles was a bit uncomfortable with the move at first, but as time went on, he came to love, and protect, his new home.

    Teo’s Bodega

Along with Harlem came a supporting cast of residents that by the end of the game were referring to Miles as “our Spider-Man”, as he states in the video. Teo is one of these residents, and he has a cat. Named Spider-Man the Cat. Which made for a very fun alternate costume for those of you who have unlocked it in the game.

Well, that’s it for me True Believers! More Web-Warriors will be coming in the new year, as well as new episodes of Return to the Spider-Verse. Until then, happy 10th Anniversary to Miles Morales! I can’t believe he’s been around for so long! It feels like just yesterday I picked up Ultimate Fallout #4 off the shelf! So what’d you guys think of the video? Who else do you want to see in Web-Warriors? Let me know below, and until next time, Face Front True Believers, and I’ll see you in the Multiverse!

  • Marvel’s Spider-Man: Hostile Takeover

Marvel’s Spider-Man: Hostile Takeover by David Liss is the story of Spider-Man trying to stop Wilson Fisk, aka the Kingpin, from initiating, well, a hostile takeover of the city. Along the way he has to contend with a spider-imposter, a deaf girl that thinks he killed her father, and the usual Peter Parker wheel of excuses when it comes to his friends and family. Here are my general thoughts about the book, the characters, and what it means for the game. SPOILERS FOR THE BOOK FOLLOW!

    Why a Novel

My first thought when I heard that there was going to be a prequel novel to the Spider-Man game was: “Um, shouldn’t it be a prequel comic?” Seeing as how Spider-Man got his roots from the comics, it only seemed right. I found it odd that Marvel would decide to go with a novel instead of paying homage to where the character originated. After reading Marvel’s Spider-Man: Hostile Takeover, I now know why they had no choice but to use a novel format, and that has to do with the main antagonist: The Kingpin.

Let’s look at it this way: Marvel’s Spider-Man PS4 is going to be a AAA blockbuster videogame. There’s going to be action, high energy fight sequences, adrenaline pumping gameplay! So, in a prequel comic, you’d expect some of the same. But the thing is, you can’t tell that kind of story with a villain like Kingpin in comic format. I mean, you can, and you’d get something along the lines of Frank Millar’s Man Without Fear. Great story, good character drama into Daredevil’s psyche and the criminal underworld, run by none other than Kingpin. But if you’re doing a prequel comic to the game I described above, you’ve gotta have costumes and explosions. This story was more of a Law and Order episode guest starring Spider-Man, not so many costumes, not so many explosions.

This kind of story would be disappointing in a comic that’s supposed to be a precursor to the best Spider-Man game ever of all time. But as a novel, you have time to slow down, and focus on the politics of Fisk and Osborn, and delve into the backstories of characters that might not even be in the game. Since the game opens with Spider-Man taking down the Kingpin, this was the logical story to tell, and a novel was the best way to do it. Maybe a better comic would be how he busted all the villains that are currently in the Raft. Yeah, actually, I’d like that comic now.

    Spider-Man

Hostile Takeover did Peter justice. They nailed his personality, cracking jokes in combat, caring about people he hardly knew when they died, struggling with the balance between Peter Parker and Spider-Man. It’s tried and true, the web-slinger we all love. Which is why I think we didn’t spend a ton of time with him. We all know who Peter is, what he’s about. We all know he can’t make a date to save his life and has to constantly bail on the people he cares about when he hears sirens. But we didn’t need a story about Peter, because that’s all been covered, and will be more so in the game. We spent a surprising amount of time focusing on Mary Jane, and the villains.

    Kingpin

I really feel like Liss fashioned his version of Kingpin on the one we see in Netflix’s Daredevil. There’s even a point in the book where it says he’d bash someone’s head in for even thinking about embarrassing him in front of Vanessa. Ring any bells? But yes, even the game developers referenced the Netflix show a lot, so it’s no surprise that this universe’s version of Fisk resembles him a bit. Except this time, he’s trying to keep a lid on his temper to line up with this new public image as a saint here to save New York. It actually lines up with the Daily Bugle newspaper articles posted on the PlayStation website (CLICK HERE), as do other things in the book, but I’ll get there later.

However, they do balance out that version of Fisk with the one from the comics, being unnaturally large, unbelievably strong, and faster than you’d expect a guy his size to move. Kingpin is a character that always seems to be in control, but this novel showed how when he has his hands in too many pies, things can start to unravel around him. His trust in Maya Lopez and reliance on Michael Bingham, the other two antagonists, added up to the inevitable downfall we’ll see when we boot up the game.

    Bad Guys

Blood Spider and Echo. A lot of you just said “Who?”. A lot of you just said “Psh, I know who they are” when in actuality you’ve maybe heard the names once in some random comic. I don’t blame you. When it came to villains, I guess all the good ones were reserved for the game, so Liss had to dig through a grab bag of obscure Marvel villains (a bag I’m sure Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. and the Netflix shows have done a great deal of digging through) and pull out these two. But it’s not who they are already that matters, it’s who you make them to be in your story.

Michael Bingham was mentally unstable, left to the streets as a teenager, and taken by Oscorp to be experimented on. He came out with spider powers, and the delusion that he was the real Spider-Man. Fisk hired him to smear Spidey’s good name, but Bingham ran out with it, racking up a body count and causing Fisk a lot of headaches, donning the moniker of Blood Spider. He gave Peter a run for his money.

Maya Lopez was orphaned when Spider-Man apparently killed her father, but was taken in by Wilson Fisk (who actually killed her father!). She was deaf, but learned to mimic people. She could make her voice sound as if she had perfect hearing, and she could take down men twice her size, often able to copy moves perfectly she’d only seen once. All in a focused goal of taking down one man: Spider-Man. Armed with her father’s spear, and a handprint over her eye, she became Echo, and set out to just that. But she was bound to the will of Fisk, the man to whom she believed she owed everything.

The way their stories unfolded over the course of the book was fascinating. Each character had clear motivations, and their relationships with Fisk really drove the urgency for Spider-Man to stop them. And while Maya eventually became sort of a hero, Bingham was a chaotic force that needed to be stopped at any cost. I liked how the novel allows us to get a fresh take on some pretty obscure villains, and create new, challenging threats for Spider-Man. It is a tad disappointing, however, given how much time we spent with them that neither character appears to be in the game. Their stories wrapped up here, Bingham headed to Ravencroft and Maya headed back home. But who knows? They might have a lasting impact on the game’s narrative.

    Allies

We did spend a lot of time with Mary Jane. We know that the game starts with her not having seen Peter for 6 months, where the book leaves them, but here we see her get her job at the Bugle working for Robbie. The game developers stressed that MJ is more of a partner in crime-fighting than a damsel in this game, and I really got that sense in this book. MJ dug up information and leads getting close to Fisk and Maya that helped Peter do his thing. But it was her constant putting herself in danger that made Peter worry too much, and get protective to the point where MJ said he was smothering her, and that’s why they broke it off. But based on what I’ve read in this book, I have no doubt the ‘play as Mary Jane’ levels in the game will be interesting to say the least.

Then we move to Yuri Watanabe, the Slott era police captain who’s only a lieutenant in this book. We get her first interaction with Spider-Man here, and learn how their partnership develops to the point where he’s calling her for tips and help in the game. Though it was strained at times, Spider-Man’s relationship with Yuri was a huge step forward in taking down Fisk, and she’s a genuinely good cop.

Others were less referenced in the novel, such as Harry, Aunt May, Martin Li, and J. Jonah Jameson. For these guys, the book was more of an informational guide as to why the characters are where they are when the game picks up. Harry’s going to Europe to distance himself from Norman, though Peter’s said that he seemed more on edge. JJJ got his Just the Facts podcast, and Peter was introduced to Li through Aunt May. They weren’t crucial to the story, but I am grateful that we got some context to the roles they’ll be playing in the game.

    Secrets

You guys know I love my bullet points, so let me divvy up some secrets I’ve discovered that, using years of Spider-Man knowledge and context clues, I’m pretty sure will come to pass in the game. However, if you wish to remain spoiler free, even though I’m not 100% in any of these, skip this part.

    • Insomniac refused to state who Peter’s working for in his lab, and the book played coy as well, simply referring to his place of employment as ‘the lab’ and his boss as ‘the boss’ of ‘Peter’s mentor’. Well, I’m telling you, it’s Dr. Connors. Peter’s working on neural interfaces for making prosthetic limbs that react like real body parts, and the Lizard was name dropped twice. The book was careful to only mention villains that have been revealed (a Tombstone namedrop aside), so this makes me 99.99% certain that Peter is employed by Curt Connors.

    • Insomniac has also, for two years, refused to comment on the white spider. They’ve said it’s to make their version of Spidey immediately recognizable, which I get, and actually appreciate, but they said there’s also a story-based reason behind it. Bingham, aka Blood Spider, a man who was wearing his suit, blowing up restaurants, and straight up shooting people, has to be that reason. With the help of JJJ, half the city believed that Spider-Man had gone rogue. Also, in another issue of the Daily Bugle (CLICK HERE), it mentions spider-imposters trying to imitate the Wall-Crawler. Spider-Man probably wants to distance himself from the massacres of Blood Spider and protect citizens wearing his suit from super villains that might think they have a shot at the real deal. Hence, he gets the white spider. I’m 90.56% sure of that one.

    • Maya, Fisk, Bingham, and Spidey were all after a flash drive that had some dirt on Norman Osborn. Fisk nearly used it to complete his hostile takeover, but Maya destroyed it. I have no idea what’s on that flash drive, but Insomniac’s said nothing about Osborn except he’s up for re-election and he hired Silver Sable. Even the book was sparse on details, other than the fact that he created Blood Spider. Also, there was no indication that Norman had become the Green Goblin. I think it’s weird that in 8 years, Spider-Man’s never faced his greatest foe. In the Face Front Podcast covering the E3 footage (CLICK HERE), I suggested that the mystery villain at the end was Goblin. I’m 22.37% sure of that, but there is a lot we don’t know about Osborn, and the book makes it clear that he is capable of very, very dangerous things.

    Wrap Up

So in the end, this is a good read. It serves as both a great Spider-Man story on it’s own, and a prequel to the game we’ll finally get to play in a few days. I loved it, and I’d recommend it to anyone, whether you’re getting the game or not. If you’re a Spidey fan, don’t sleep on this. Marvel’s Spider-Man: Hostile Takeover gets a 10/10 in my book!

  • Marvel’s Spider-Man has Become Just as Good as Spectacular Spider-Man!

Marvel’s Spider-Man is a relatively new show that began airing last year, and while people agree it’s not bad, no one has called it spectacular. Literally. The Spectacular Spider-Man, a show that aired March 8, 2008 (How do I know the exact date? Because it was my birthday!) is said by many to be the best Spider-Man show to date. This is a pretty universal opinion. I myself feel like it’s the 90’s series, but that’s neither here nor there. But yesterday marked Marvel’s Spider-Man’s first appearance of the classic Spidey foe Venom. And yes, I know that Venom showed up in the first season, but this is VENOM! I mean, Eddie Brock + Symbiote = Spider-hating powerhouse! And when I was watching this episode, a thought crossed my mind: This is just as good as the Venom debut episode in Spectacular Spider-Man. Blasphemy! Heresy! I know, I know, but first, before you lambaste me, hear me out. In this article, I’m going to match up these two episodes: Dead Man’s Party and Nature vs. Nurture. Hopefully, by the end, you’ll see what I do. I literally pulled out my old Spectacular Spider-Man DVDs and re-watched the episode just so that it was fresh in my mind, so I put in the work for this one! Here’s what I found.

    The Premise

Marvel’s Spider-Man: Peter turns in Spidey footage to Jameson that is far superior to Brock’s, and not only does Jameson put Eddie on blast, but he gives Peter his assignment on the V2-52 (The Symbiote in this show). Eddie gets steamed, even after Peter surrenders the assignment, and states that he always comes out on top. While on the assignment, Eddie sneaks into the lab, but the V2-52 gets loose, and bonds with him.

Spectacular Spider-Man: Having lost the Symbiote (Because Spider-Man was wearing it), the Conners family can no longer pay Eddie, so he’s let go. Eddie, who already doesn’t trust Peter, walks in on Spider-Man destroying the Symbiote, and blames him for taking his last chance. The Symbiote, still alive, then bonds with Brock, and he vows vengeance on Spider-Man.

First off, all of the setup in the Spectacular Spider-Man was in the previous episode. So walking in to the two episodes I’m comparing, you literally have no clue why Eddie hates Peter and Spider-Man. But that’s why so many people love Spectacular, because of the overarching story, which I won’t fault it for. While Spectacular took the Ultimate comics route of making Peter and Eddie childhood friends whose parents died together, Marvel’s Spider-Man ran with the tried and true Daily Bugle competitors. And honestly, you don’t need a whole season to tell that story. In several previous episodes, we’ve seen Jameson praise Peter’s work, resulting in an annoyed grunt from Eddie, but this episode is where they truly butt heads.

    The Plot

Marvel’s Spider-Man: Peter and Miles want to throw a party while Aunt May is out of town. Peter is apprehensive, but Miles turns him around. They invite all of Horizon High, but Flash decides to throw a party the same night. So aside from Gwen, Anya, Aleski, and awkwardly Max Modell, not much is happening when suddenly the power goes out…

Spectacular Spider-Man: It’s Thanksgiving, and all of Midtown is prepping for the big parade. Meanwhile, Peter is preoccupied making sure Aunt May is okay, after the recent heart attack she’s suffered. Fresh out of the black suit, he quits working for Tombstone, and tries to get a jump on Thanksgiving dinner, but is not doing too well. He then finds the Gene Cleanser from the Lizard episode he kept, and ponders his actions as Spider-Man. Suddenly, he’s pulled out of the window by a web…

The plots of the episodes are not that far off from each other. One’s focused around a party, one’s focused around a holiday. Of course Spectacular holds more emotional weight because Aunt May is recovering from a heart attack, but again, just based on the two episodes and no previous context, they match up pretty equally.

    Venom Attacks

    Marvel’s Spider-Man:

    • Peter finds Eddie in his room. He talks about Peter’s privilege, then attacks him.

    • Peter flees to protect his friends, Venom pursues.

    • Not able to find Peter, Venom threatens to return to the party, but is soon confronted by Spider-Man.

    • Spider-Man tries to convince the V2-52 to take him back, but it doesn’t work.

    • Spidey and Venom fight, loud noises fail to stop Venom, but Miles shows up with flash bangs.

    • After a fight with Spider-Man and Miles, Venom escapes.

    Spectacular Spider-Man:

    • Venom beats and restrains Peter at his house, then threatens to go after everyone he loves.

    • Peter meets Venom at the hospital and fights to protect Aunt May. Venom gives up, claiming he knows who Peter loves most.

    • Spider-Man stakes out the parade, keeping an eye on Mary Jane because Brock had gone out with her to hurt Peter, but Gwen is the real target and gets strung up to a balloon.

    • Spidey and Venom fight, Spidey trying to save Gwen the entire time.

    • Eddie talks about Peter’s privilege, and the Midtown students save Gwen.

    • Peter convinces the Symbiote to take him back, but it’s a trick. He leaves Eddie unconscious on the roof and buries the Symbiote in cement.

Do you see! In both, Peter tried to get the Symbiote back. In both, Eddie talked about Peter having more than he did. In both, Venom attacks Peter at home and threatens his loved ones! And each had an added bonus the other didn’t. We got more of a suspenseful thriller in Spectacular as Venom chased after Peter’s loved ones (complete with jump scares). And in Marvel’s Spider-Man we got an action packed team-up with Miles and Spidey vs. Venom! One thing I did find strange about Spectacular is that Spidey never tried sound, even though he knew that was the Symbiote’s weakness. The biggest difference, however, is that in one Spider-Man defeated Venom, and in the other he escaped. Now, Venom was the season finale villain in Spectacular, and, I mean, who better, but by putting Venom in the middle of the season, Marvel’s Spider-Man can continue the story, and who knows what kind of damage Venom can do!

    End Tag

Marvel’s Spider-Man: Venom vows that he’s just getting started, and reminds us that he know’s Peter is Spider-Man.

Spectacular Spider-Man: Before she leaves Peter’s house after a Thanksgiving dinner, Gwen kisses Peter, Venom’s voice echoing “We know who you love the most.”

Both of those are anticipatory wait and see moments. Wait and see how Peter will address Gwen kissing him, and wait and see what torment Venom has in store for Spidey. One, I unfortunately had to wait half a year for, because it was the season finale and Spectacular Spider-Man had to move to Disney XD. With the other, however, I get my answers next week! But I can honestly say that I’m just as excited on an adrenaline level for Marvel’s Spider-Man as I was on an emotional level for Spectacular Spider-Man all those years ago.

So as you can see, these episodes are not so different. I enjoyed Dead Man’s Party just as much as Nature vs. Nurture. Marvel’s Spider-Man may not have the emotional heft or long term storytelling that Spectacular Spider-Man did. But it is a darn good show, and I think it has finally reached a point where it can be considered at least equal to its predecessor. I really hope that people will begin to see that. But don’t take it from me! Go watch this episode if you already haven’t and see for yourself! Then you let me know.

  • I Challenged Insomniac! Game On!

If you follow Face Front on Twitter, then you might realize that I have just openly challenged Insomniac Games! Like a lot of you True Believers out there, I missed my chance at a Collector’s Edition for Marvel’s Spider-Man PS4, and Insomniac isn’t planning on making more! So, I issued an… ultimatum of sorts.

If they agree to make more, I’ll fire up my physical copy of Spyro 2: Ripto’s Rage (which is actually my first ever video game) and it will be the only, I repeat, the ONLY game I play until I complete it 100%! I’m talking Dragon Shores roller coaster and unlimited super breath baby! Will Insomniac accept? The ball is in their court! Stay tuned True Believers, this could get very interesting! Let the Spyder-Man Ultimatum begin!
