General Perception of Cyclops

As most people who know me are aware, Spider-Man is my favorite Marvel hero. What not as many people know, is that my second favorite is Scott Summers, Cyclops.

So when I was at work the other day, a coworker of mine asked:

"Hey, who's your second favorite superhero, after Spider-Man?"

"Cyclops, leader of the X-Men." I answered.

"Oh wow," he replied "that's an interesting choice, not many people would think of that."

"Yeah, that's because he got shafted in the movies!" I furiously fumed.

"Oh yeah, didn't his girlfriend like, break up with him and then blow him up?" This man said to me.

I stared blankly, and blinked.

"Yeah. That's exactly what happened."

I mean... what else am I supposed to say? Ignoring the fact that Jean Grey was reduced to just 'his girlfriend', the general public's perception of Scott is so washed, man.

His girlfriend broke up with him then blew him up!? That's what people think of when they think of Cyclops. Not leader of the X-Men. Not the guy with an optic blast powerful enough to blow Sentinels to dust. Not the man who puts his life on the line everyday to achieve Charles Xavier's dream of Mutant tolerance and equality.

No. To the average man, Cyclops is the guy whose girlfriend broke up with him then blew him up. I know that X3: The Last Stand came out in 2006, so it's not easy to recall the exact details of Cyclops' fate, but come on! Not to mention that X-Men: Apocalypse or Dark Phoenix didn't do anything for the character in terms of a cultural revival. So he's just stuck with people remembering him for being the first offscreen casualty in probably my least favorite X-Men movie.

I really, really hope the MCU does Cyclops some kind of justice, because until then, that's what people are gonna think of my guy! I can't, I actually can't. Justice for Cyclops! May he one day be presented as the hero I already view him to be! That's it for now, Face Front True Believers, and I'll see you in the Multiverse.
