  • Marvel Problems #003

Let’s be honest here. The promo picture looked COMPLETELY different, and we were all under the impression that, you know, they could actually come out of that dang case! And on top of that, the costume pass wasn’t even included in the cost! But hey, the statues were cool, and let’s not forget that the eggs, um, stones, could glow! Yeah, I could’ve passed on this…

  • Marvel’s Spider-Man PS4 at PlayStation E3 2018

I was so excited to see gameplay from Marvel’s Spider-Man at E3! To get my full thoughts, check out the latest episode of the Face Front Podcast RIGHT HERE. This post is for conversation! What did you guys think? Let me know below and we’ll talk. Here’s the video below in case (somehow) you missed it.

  • Proceed with Caution: Marvel Strike Force

I really can’t do this! It’s like a girlfriend that keeps getting back into an abusive relationship. Here we are, with yet another Marvel mobile game: Marvel Strike Force. It looks cool. It sounds cool. It’s got a cool story behind it: Dimension hopping, world conquering, Kree warlord Ultimus challenging Earth’s Mightiest Heroes! Everything about it makes me want to play it. But I’m apprehensive because Marvel and their new mobile games are… finicky to say the least. Let’s actually dive into several reasons that I, and you, should proceed with caution.

#1: Marvel Heroes, Avengers Alliance, and Tsum Tsum

About 4 years. Countless hours. Hundreds of dollars. Prestige level 60 Spider-Man with level 60 Captain America and Cyclops in tow. So many cool costumes, from Jim Lee Jean Grey to Netflix Daredevil. Awesome sidekicks like Quake, Falcon, and Firestar. A Marvel game where I could be whoever I wanted, fight whoever I wanted, and live the dream in the Marvel Universe. Gone. In the blink of an eye. Marvel Heroes, and more recently Marvel Heroes Omega, without very much warning, shut down, taking years of fun and joy with it. The console version of the game didn’t even get a chance. This hurt me, deep. I’m still distraught. In the last day, I got my Spider-Man, Miles right by his side, walked out to the Helicarrier window, and looked out into the sky, knowing he’d soon be gone forever.

That’s the most recent example of the rug being pulled from under us. But then, we look back at Marvel Tsum Tsum. That came out earlier this year, and now it’s gone. It was a fun, simple time passing puzzle game, but if anything, the simplicity of it should have kept it around longer! But the game’s now unplayable, abandoned by the developers.

And let’s not forget the big fiasco that was Avengers Alliance and Avengers Alliance 2, the Facebook followed by mobile game that drew in so many. I played the first one on Facebook for a long time, and then the sequel on my tablet. Let me tell you, Avengers Alliance 2 was great. The cell-shaded art style, the roster, Spider-Man’s classic Spider-Sense sound effect. All good stuff, they got a good $10 out of me. Gone, both at the same time.

What I’m saying is, that’s four games, two long time stays and two that didn’t even last a full year. So where’s the incentive to leap into a brand new mobile game?

    #2: There’s already so many!

I actively play Marvel Future Fight, Marvel Contest of Champions, Avengers Academy, and Spider-Man Unlimited. And there’s Puzzle Quest out there too! These games alone (especially freaking Avengers Academy and Contest of Champions!) require an insane amount of dedication and time, time that someone living a life doesn’t have to give. So now they’re asking us to add Strike Force into the mix? I’ve come too far and invested too much in these games to drop any of them, and now there’s gonna be another one with timed events, and limited gear, and special missions, I can’t handle it!

#3: Still no X-Men, still no Fantastic 4

So in light of today’s news about Disney finally buying Fox (more on that soon), this might change, but we all know that for the past few years, Marvel’s been pretending that the X-Men and Fantastic 4 don’t exist (see my other article, Fate of the Fantastic 4). Heck, in its last days they took the Fantastic 4 out of Marvel Heroes Omega. And I believe that the only reason Future Fight got X-Men is because Netmarble bought Kabam, who already had X-Men from the start. So, in the trailer, images, and interview for Strike Force, we see not one iota of the classic Marvel teams. Why am I going to play yet another game where I can’t be my second favorite superhero of all time, Cyclops? What if I want to Flame On or think it’s Clobbering Time? Seriously, at this point, the exclusion of these characters is simply annoying. Again, this Disney/Fox deal could turn the tides (and the fact that the game is being made by developer FoxNet), but I’ll believe it when I see it.

So those are my thoughts. Again, the game looks really fun, and really cool, but I just don’t know if I can go through it again with another mobile game from Marvel. What are your thoughts True Believers? What games do you play and are you ready to jump into this one? Comment below, and I’ll see you in the Multiverse!

  • In Case You’re Having a Bad Day…

In case you were having a bad day, here’s a fun scene from Guardians of the Galaxy: The Telltale Series, Episode 3: More than a Feeling. Finished the entire game today, it’s definitely worth playing. Especially now that all the episodes are out, there’s no better time to pick it up! With so many choices, how will you shape the fate of the Guardians? I don’t think I was perfect, but I did alright!

  • The City Needs Spider-Man

Paris has never really done anything for me personally… until now! The PlayStation Paris Game Week Media Showcase has unleashed a new Spider-Man PS4 trailer! Thank you Paris!

In this trailer, we get a good look at that work/life balance with Peter and Spider-Man that Insomniac’s been talking about so much. He’s taking MJ out to dinner, recruiting Miles to help Aunt May at F.E.A.S.T., getting evicted, all that fun Parker Luck stuff! And as per Parker Luck usual, just when Peter thinks he can have a life outside of Spider-Man, Mr. Negative turns up the heat!

Honestly, I think Mr. Negative is gonna be, like, 1/5 of this game, but that’s the only villain they’re showing us for now, so it only seems like he’s a game-wide threat. Yes, we’ve seen Kingpin, but we know he gets busted in the beginning (and from the looks of Willie, it seems like it was a rough fight!). We also caught the most fleeting of glimpses at the Shocker, who’s always fun to throw down with in a Spidey game. But back to what I was saying, Insomniac says that this game has a massive story, so it’s hard to believe that Mr. Negative and his Inner Demons are going to be a threat the entire way through.

We also get a lot of Mary Jane in this trailer, which is refreshing for me. For those of you who follow the blog, you know I’m a big Spider-Man/Mary Jane fan. Since One More Day they’ve been separated in the comics, then The Amazing Spider-Man franchise made Gwen a hot commodity, Zendaya may or may not be her in the movies, and even in the new Marvel’s Spider-Man cartoon we keep getting references and teases, but no MJ! I really like seeing her, not only as Peter’s emotional support, but it looks like she’s doing field work too! She’s looking into the Devil’s Breath (Mr. Negative’s drug), saving hostages, teaming up with Spider-Man. I swear, that POV at the 1:19 minute mark makes it look like you even get to play as MJ! That should be fun.

Alright, lastly I’m gonna break down some geek-out moments:

    • Martin Li stating that F.E.A.S.T. is the “best part of me”. You know, because he has two sides, you know?

    • Osborn for Mayor! Yeah, because that always ends well…

    • Kingpin’s dressed in black, not white. So either he they’re favoring the look from Marvel’s Daredevil, or… did he get hit by Mr. Negative!?!? It’s probably the former, but still.

    • Peter’s Spider Sense effect, heart eye emoji!

    • We saw Yuri Watanabe on Peter’s com link in the 9 minute demo, but now we see her in person! Is Wraith far behind?

    • Oscorp merchendise in Grand Central terminal. What’s that about?

    • Crusher Hogan vs. The Spider poster in Peter’s apartment, nice!

    • Speaking of Peter’s apartment, October 15, 2018 is circled on his calendar. Release date confirmed!? Maybe!

Well, that’s all I’ve got! I can’t wait for this game! How about you guys? Comment below! Spider-Man PS4 drops 2018 (maybe October 15)!

  • Marvel vs. Capcom Infinite, Unboxing, Gameplay, and Thoughts

So this week I snagged the Collector’s Edition for Marvel vs. Capcom Infinite!I’ve got to say, it was worth every cent. Not only that, but the game is great! Here’s an unboxing video so you guys can see everything that’s in it:

I also recorded a little gameplay so you can get a taste of what it’s like, and how much more work I need to do to improve my skills!

Overall I love the game, the mechanics are engaging and fun. The 2v2 system seems to make the fights more manageable, since you’ve only got 2 characters to keep track of. And the Infinity Stones, total game changer! They add a severe edge and have backed me out of some tight spots. Also they story is very enjoyable, I love seeing the Marvel and Capcom characters work together (even if it defeats the point of having “vs” in the title). I honestly don’t know too much about Capcom characters, and generally don’t care about them, but seeing them fight alongside my favorite heroes has warmed me up to some of them. All in all, I’d say give it a go! I’ve been playing all week, and I don’t think I’m gonna stop!

  • New Marvel v.s Capcom Infinite Story Trailer!

We’ve got another trailer for Marvel v.s Capcom Infinite! All I have to say is… Please add Venom! Please add Venom! Please add Venom!

Phew, okay, that’s out of my system. I know a lot of people have been complaining about the roster using a lot of recycled MvC3 characters and no X-Men, and sure there’s room for improvement (where’s Ant-Man or Kamala Khan? Or Venom!) But when they drop trailers like this, it makes everything seem alright.

There’s a lot in here. Dormammu’s back, Spider-Man’s in the black suit (please add Venom), Iron Man’s trying to start another Civil War, and there’s a bunch of Capcom guys making trouble for our heroes. It looks like this game, if anything, will at least have an awesome story! What do you guys think? Still want more in the roster? Have you pre-ordered yet? Let me know below!

  • Spider-Man Confirmed on Marvel v.s Capcom Infinite #SDCC

Now I can pre-order the game in good faith knowing that Spider-Man is confirmed! Comic Con kept the hits coming with the reveal that Spider-Man, Frank West, and Nemisis (you know, that big immovable tank character) are in the game and a new creative stage combining A.I.M and Umbrella! Get ready for some Crawler Assault and Maximum Spider! Also there’s a new special with cameo from a longtime Spidey villain! And we got a first look at the Mind Stone, which apparently maxes out your special meter. Very helpful I’d say! Marvel v.s Capcom Infinite launches September 19!

  • Marvel Powers United VR #D23

Well what a nice surprise! Bill Rosemann, the head of Marvel Games (aka a guy who has done more work in the past few months than in his entire career at Marvel) announced at D23 a new exclusive, Marvel Powers United VR! Markiplier was there and everything. This game is exclusive for the Oculus Rift+Touch (which means I should probably re-label my ‘PlayStation VR’ money jar) and, so far, features Captain Marvel (heart eyes emoji), Hulk, and Rocket Raccoon. Here’s a trailer:

I could have sworn from the colors she was wearing that girl was going to transform into Black Widow. But that aside, this looks great! And I’m not just saying that. Every time I see VR it looks choppy and awkward, but I’ve come to accept that because I honestly didn’t think it could get any better. But this looks fluid, and responsive. When ‘ol Markiplier was playing it, it really seemed like he was Hulk smashing some Kree goons.

The story apparently consists of Ronan the Accuser (hence the Kree) and the Masters of Evil (isn’t Falcon going to fight those guys in Episode 2 of Sam Says! Sorry, shameless plug, I regret nothing) getting their hands on the Tesseract and tearing apart time and space. Luckily Lockjaw is there to help them teleport around this mess!

They promised more characters and multiplayer, which we actually saw in action, so I really am looking forward to this. I normally don’t look twice at VR projects (except that Spider-Man Homecoming one), but this has my undivided attention! What about you guys? Are you gonna buy a Oculus Rift for this? Lef me know down below!

  • Marvel Heroes Omega

WARNING: This post contains ‘gamer lingo’, words like XP and gear and beta. If you are not fluent, you may get a little lost. Don’t worry, I’ll try and keep it simple.

So, I played Marvel Heroes Omega today. Actually, I started playing Marvel Heroes back in 2013 in the PC beta, but yesterday was the official console launch. They’ve been in beta on consoles for about a month (which I also played), but now that they’ve fully launched, I’m going to assume that this is the most perfect version of the game they were after for this date. So, with that in mind, I’m going to talk about it!

So I played around with Spider-Man, who I bought the character pack for in the beta. He’s my favorite hero and, after 4 years of playing him in the PC version, I have a pretty good idea of what he can do. I was playing on PS4 with my brother playing as Black Widow. He’s a DC fan, and literally doesn’t like any Marvel hero except for Widow, so that’s fine. I am a big fan of the couch co-op they added, which for obvious reasons couldn’t be done on PC. It’s like when we played Ultimate Alliance back in the day, and it’s way more fun to run around these levels with a friend than it is doing it by your lonesome. We played through the Hell’s Kitchen level, where you’ve got to fight Venom, Electro, Shocker, and Doc Ock, in an attempt to secure the Tablet of Life and Time.

I’ve been through this mission quite a few times, having been on the game for so long. But I must say, they’ve definitely changed the level up. It’s a bit more streamlined for consoles. For instance, Electro would show up at random times and places in the PC version, and you and a group of other players would have to box him in and beat him. Now, he’s got his own little power plant, and his goons! They also changed the Venom fight, not drastically, but, well, Alistair Smythe used to be in the level and now he’s not… The Shocker and Doc Ock fights are basically the same.

I like the gameplay and controls. You can assign which attacks you want to which slots, which makes it nice and easy. I like playing consoles better than PC, I grew up on PlayStation, and a good Duelshock feels right in my hands. In the PC the moves were attached to A, S, D, F, G and H on the keyboard. But using the good old X, square, circle and triangle just feels so much better, and you can access a secondary set of moves by holding L2.

Like the PC version, this one has gear. I feel like the inventory is a lot smaller, which is burdensome when you try to pick up a mask or web shooters and Spider-Man complains “I only have two arms here… usually!” But I overcame inventory in the PC, so I think I can do it here. The system is also simplified, with big green arrows on each piece of gear telling you “Oh, this will make you stronger!” and big red ones saying “Nah fam, trade this in for crafter XP.”

Speaking of XP, more powers unlock as you get higher in level, which would be a problem for my brother, because Black Widow caps at level 10 unless I fully unlock her which would allow her to go to 60. Luckily we finished the level as he hit level 9. But it’s a little jarring, since My Spider-Man on the PC is not only level 60, but has prestige as well, so not having access to all his powers makes me a little impatient. I had to hit level 10 just to web swing!

Now, there are some things I take issue with. For instance, everything is so much more expensive! Like, leaps and bounds. Things you didn’t have to buy, with real or in-game currency, in the PC version are being sold here! Also, the character selection is drastically decreased, as are the costumes, and the sidekicks are absent. But I feel all that will come in time, so I’ll be patient. Except for the Fantastic Four, who have been removed from both versions of the game, but that’s a post for another day. Now this next issue made me very upset. I saw a Spider-Man loot box, with a chance at the Spider-Man Homecoming costume, the hooded version, Spider-Gwen, Amazing Spider-Man, or Iron Man’s Mark 47. Each cost 250 G’s (currency that can only be acquired with real money). I had 500 from the Spider-Man character pack I bought, so I said hey, why not, any of those costumes would be sweet, and I get two chances! What the loot box failed to mention, however, was that I also had a chance to get NO COSTUME AT ALL! Which was the case with both boxes I opened, so now I have zero G’s, no new Spider-Man costumes, and a bunch of useless junk I’m probably going to trade or dismantle later. Stupid me, I guess. Costumes in the PC version have always been for sale, which is why I like Marvel Heroes. No BS ‘chance’ crap like in pretty much every Marvel mobile game, you get what you pay for. But I actually discovered that this is the only way to get the Homecoming stuff, even in the PC version, a chance draw through Fortune Cards, which makes me very sad after how long I’ve been supporting this game.

So, never buying loot boxes again. But other than that, all I’ve ever wanted, since I played the PC beta back in 2013, was for Marvel Heroes to come to PlayStation, and now I finally have that. It’s a great start, and there is room for improvement, but so far, I think that newcomers will be able to jump right in and have a good time. PC players can stick with that, heck, I have more characters and costumes in the PC version, so I’ll still play that too. But playing on the PS4, well, that’s just a dream, that’s finally come true.
