Spider-Man: Return to the Spider-Verse Episode 3: Peter Parker, PI

The next chapter in Spidey’s adventure is here! In order to complete the Super Collider, Spidey must team up with Spider-Man Noir and the cunning Black Cat (voiced by Sara Pezel) to acquire Adamantium from the most ruthless gangster New York has ever seen: Hammerhead! Check out the video below, then keep scrolling for some exclusive behind the scenes content!

    Sara Pezel is… Black Cat!

As mentioned above, the ever talented Sara Pezel lent her voice to the Noir version of Felicia Hardy. I had nearly given up my search for a voice actress, but one day I came across a post from Sara on Twitter talking about Black Cat in the latest issue of her solo ongoing. We got to talking about Felicia, and then bells started dinging in my head. Not only is Sara a fellow True Believer, but she has a rich knowledge of the source material and is particularly fond of Black Cat. So I decided to offer her the role, and lucky for me, she accepted! Sara truly brings life to Black Cat, and I couldn’t have asked for a better actress! And make sure you check out Sara’s awesome stuff on Twitter, Instagram, and YouTube!

    From Comics to Screen

Of course I read through all the Spider-Man Noir comics I could get my hands on when I decided to partner Peter up with his Noir counterpart for this adventure. Thanks Marvel Unlimited. Of course I took liberties with the material to fit my universe, but there are some Easter eggs I sprinkled in the video. Here’s a list in case you didn’t catch them!

-Adamantium: We all know the famous metal fused to Wolverine’s bones to make him indestructible. Now Hammerhead’s head plate is usually some form of steel, but I decided to take a page out of the 90’s animated Spider-Man show (my favorite!) and make it Adamantium. That way getting the stuff would be a challenge for the Spidey gang!

-When Hammerhead says Montana told him that Man Mountain Marko spotted Jonsey singing to DeWolff: That’s Montana from the Enforcers, who worked for Goblin in the books. Man Mountain Marko is just a tall strong guy, but he usually throws in with mobsters like Hammerhead. And DeWolff is a detective in the Noir world. He’s a version of Jean DeWolff, who infamously got killed by the Sin Eater in the 616 Universe.

-Ben Urich: The Daily Bugle Reporter Ben Urich took a liking to Peter and a radical version of Aunt May. He took Peter under his wing, and taught him the ropes about crime, where to find it, who’s who in the underworld. But Urich was no saint. However, Peter inspired him to turn his life around. Unfortunately he was too little too late, and was killed before he could flip on the Goblin, the biggest crime boss in town.

-The Black Cat Club: When Felicia says that Hammerhead raided The Black Cat, she’s actually talking about the night club she runs in the comics called The Black Cat. It was a speakeasy where anyone from criminals to politicians met up and hung out. But it was off limits to being attacked, kind of like an unspoken truce, and everyone knew it. So Hammerhead raiding it is a big deal!

The Idol: In the Noir universe, Peter wasn’t bitten by a radioactive spider. He got his powers from a strange spider idol, with a connection to a spider god. When the army of spiders that came out of it didn’t devour Peter, it deemed him worthy and gave him powers. There was no cat idol in the comics, but I created one to give Felicia abilities!

-Black Cat’s face: In the books, Felicia would… fool around… with folks who would patron her club. Sometimes with Spider-Man Noir (he’ll tell you when you’re older) and sometimes with less savory guys, like the mob boss Crime-Master! But when Crime-Master found out she was fooling around with Spider-Man Noir, he smashed her into a mirror, and then cut her face up with a blade! Yikes! Felicia wore a mask from that point on, never letting the world see what had become of her face.

-Sandman: Wondering why Sandman didn’t use his powers? Because in the Noir world he didn’t have any! Similar to Man Mountain Marko (last name may or may not be a coincidence) Sandman was just a big strong guy. They called him Sandman because he put people to sleep… permanently! He nearly beat Spider-Man Noir to death before DeWolff and his squad emptied their clips into him, and he was still fighting after that! He did eventually die from his wounds, but as we know, a lot of villains have been mysteriously coming back to life after Falcon’s snap!

-Iron Spider: Peter activates the Iron Spider by using Protocol 17A, which is actually what Tony tells Friday in Infinity War to activate the Iron Spider! And as we saw in Far From Home, the suit needs to charge on a dock to stay powered up. Since it is OP and bulletproof, I decided I’d give Peter enough juice to use it once, and this was it! Also, if you watch Episode 1 of Return to the Spider-Verse, you’ll notice the comic Iron Spider suit in the Hall of Armors, where it was in Into the Spider-Verse. At the end of this episode, they’ve replaced it with Peter’s Iron Spider suit, since it’s now a “High-tech paperweight”.

-Shock: Spider-Man 2099 (voiced by Xavier Hernandez) shows up to tell Peter that the Master Planner isn’t who he thinks it is! Unfortunately he’s cut off before he can reveal the Master Planner’s identity, but before that he realizes he showed up too soon, and says “Shock, I’m too soon!” In the 2099 comics, “shock” is like a universal swear word. So you could say “Who the shock are you?” or “What the shock do you think you’re doing!” I know, Captain America would flip out at all the language! I’ll stop.

    The Score

I always use music from various Spider-Man productions in my videos to keep it authentic. I mean, say goodbye to monetization, but worth it! Anyways, here’s the songs I had in this one:

Quantum Physics- I used this tune from Into the Spider-Verse during the opening when Gwen (voiced effortlessly as always by Eileen Nestman) is explaining, well, quantum physics to Peter. Nice, right!

Spider-Man: Shattered Dimensions- I used one of the Noir level songs from this game in Peter Parker’s PI office. I’m so happy this game had 3 levels centered around Spider-Man Noir, make my life easy!

Spider-Man 3 The Game- Remember Jean DeWolff? Well, in the Spider-Man 3 movie game, there were several levels where you had to help her take down some dirty cops. No, that did not happen in the Spider-Man 3 movie, but movie tie-in games always had a whole slew of comic content thrown into them. Anyways, the music in those levels always gave me a Noir/detective kind of vibe, so I used it during the stakeout, and the action version during the big fight in the end.

Spider-Man 2 The Game- Black Cat was in that game. Not in the movie, but like I told you, these games add all kinds of fun stuff! Anyone that failed a million times to keep up with Felicia will be well familiar with the tune I used while she was talking to the Spiders on the roof. She was very hard to catch!

Bad Luck- A John Paesano hit from Marvel’s Spider-Man PS4 game, I just love that opening little bit that played whenever Felicia showed up in the City That Never Sleeps DLC. So whenever she showed up here, I was sure to use it!

Spider-Man: Edge of Time- The indirect sequel to Shattered Dimensions, this game focused on Spider-Man and Spider-Man 2099. So after he shows up with a dire warning about the Master Planner from the future, of course I slipped in some music from that game!

Well, that’s it from me. I hope you all enjoyed the video, I put a lot into this one as usual. Look forward to Episode 4, which will team Peter up with the Advanced Spidey, aka the PS4 version from Marvel’s Spider-Man! Can’t wait to fill that one up with Eastern eggs. Let me know what you thought of the video below, or what you want to see in the next one! Face Front True Believers, and I’ll see you in the Multiverse!

The music in Spider-Man: Return of the Sinister Six plays a big part, and most of it was chosen intentionally to match the scene playing at the time.

Spider-Man: Far From Home (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack)- Michael Giacchino

It’s Perfect– This is the song that played in the movie whenever Peter and MJ were having a moment, so of course I played it over the Peter and MJ moment in my video!

And Now This– This song played in the movie when Mysterio revealed Spidey’s identity in the post credits scene, so of course I played it over my recreation of that scene.

Multiple Realities– When Peter is snapped into the alternate dimension by Falcon, I play Multiple Realities because Peter does in fact find himself in one of them. This played in the film when Mysterio was explaining the Multiverse.

The Magical Mysterio Tour– This was played in the flick during Mysterio’s mind-trippy battle sequence, so it’s only right that I use for mine!

Taking the Gullible Express/ Spidey Sensitive- I played this one when Peter was surrounded, trapped, and about to be defeated, when there seemed to be no hope of him making it out. In the movie, it was when Spidey lost to Mysterio and got hit by a train, so the theme of Spider-Man defeated carried through this decision.

Marvel’s Spider-Man (Original Video Game Soundtrack)- John Paesano

The Sinister Six– The opening scene replaying the defeats of each member of the Sinister Six. As this scene is introducing them all, I chose this piece from the game where they introduce the Sinister Six.

Negative View– This may have been during a Mr. Negative fight scene in the game, but as a high-octane, fast-paced battle song, it worked perfectly for Spider-Man’s battle with the Sinister Six! One could argue that getting ambushed by six bad guys could give you a negative point of view!

Spider-Man- This instant John Paesano classic theme to the PS4 Spider-Man was the only choice to play when that particular Spidey entered the scene!

Venom (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack)- Ludwig Goransson

Symbiotes Arrive– This one was in my video when the Sinister Six had Spidey down and were about to finish him off. Then, Venom, the Symbiote, arrived! I mean, duh.

Eyes, Lungs, Pancreas– I ran this song when Venom remembered what had happened to the Spider-Man 3 version of himself. In the movie this was when Venom first fully showed up; so when he revealed himself to be hostile, I took it as the real Venom, a Spidey villain, first truly showing up.

Venom (Eminem)– This is technically a single, but still in the Venom movie. I played it when Venom took down the Sinister Six. Because honestly, who doesn’t love this sick beat from Shady! I did play the clean version, though… there might be kids watching!

The Amazing Spider-Man 2 (The Original Motion Picture Soundtrack)- Hans Zimmer

I’m Spider-Man– In the movie, this song introduced Spider-Man into the movie. After a bleak plane crash in the opening, this uplifting beat inspired hope, and let you know it was all going to be okay. So when The Amazing Spider-Man arrives to save Peter, I was hoping to capture that same feeling.

Spider-Man (Original Motion Picture Score)- Danny Elfman

Main Title– This heroic score from whenever Spider-Man entered the scene in the Raimi trilogy was the only choice to introduce Tobey’s version of the hero.

Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse (Soundtrack From & Inspired By the Movie)- Post Malone and Swae Lee

Sunflower– Sharp fans will notice that the video ended with the voices of the five heroes from Into the Spider-Verse: Miles, Gwen, Sp//dr, Spider-Ham, and Noir. So naturally, I cut in just a little bit of the top song from that album!

Spectacular Spider-Man Theme- The Tender Box

Yes, I played the Spectacular Spider-Man theme song when Spectacular Spider-Man showed up. No surprise there!

Below is the script for Spider-Man: Return of the Sinister Six. You’ll see I didn’t follow it verbatim, but this is ultimately the outline I used to tell the story.

  • Cover Story: Amazing Spider-Man (2015) #16

    Cover Story: Amazing Spider-Man (2015) #16

    First of all: Alex Ross!

    Second of all: Alex Ross!!!

I can’t express how stoked I was that Alex Ross dedicated himself to doing every single cover of the tail end of Slott’s run on Amazing Spider-Man. Truly, from the first issue (which was a strong contender for this Cover Story) to the last, the cover art was strong to the end!

This, of course, gave me a boatload of covers to choose from, but I eventually settled on #16. Why? Look at it! Firstly, let me say that I love the All-New, All-Different suit to no end. I know there were some who weren’t a fan of it, or the entire Parker Industries thing, but I’ll give it to Slott on this one, the story was different, and rather amusing.

Lastly, I just feel that this is such a, for lack of a better term, Spider-Man cover! People in danger, the world collapsing around them, and Spider-Man holding it up on his shoulders! The strength, the heroism, the courage, all in one image, is enough to bring me pure joy being a Spider-Man fan.

    Oh yeah, and Alex Ross.

That’s it for now! Happy Spider-Man Day, Face Front True Believers, and I’ll see you in the Multiverse!

  • In Defense of MCU Spider-Man

    In Defense of MCU Spider-Man

No disrespect to Tobey, I grew up with those Sam Raimi films. In fact, the first Spider-Man movie is the reason I love Marvel today, the reason Face Front exists! But I have to say I agree with the common consensus: Tobey is a great Peter Parker and a love letter to the Stan and Steve era of comics. Andrew was a great Spider-Man and more in line with the Ultimate comics. Tom Holland, however, is an excellent balance of both Peter Parker and Spider-Man, merging the best of the 616 and 1610 universes. But the problem I often come across is people believing that since Tobey is their favorite, Tom’s version of Spider-Man doesn’t count. Or, as some put it, “Not my Spider-Man”.

I’ve been quiet on this matter for a while, but I think I finally have to address the hate Tom’s Spidey gets. I feel it’s completely baseless and unwarranted. People who complain usually flock to the same argument; they say he’s the ‘Iron-Boy’ and doesn’t do anything independently for himself. That Tony holds his hand and it takes away from him being Spider-Man. Well news flash: Tony’s dead. And whoever still holds this mindset clearly wasn’t paying attention to Spider-Man: Far From Home.

Let me pitch this at you: You’re a 10-year-old science nerd, and everyone makes fun of you for it. You don’t fit in with the other kids, and it gets kind of lonely. To cheer you up, your Uncle Ben tells you about Tony Stark, the most successful man on the planet, because he’s a science nerd, like you. Then, in 2008, that rich and successful science nerd you looked up to as your idol becomes a superhero. So wouldn’t your first instinct if you suddenly became a superhero as well be to become the man you’ve idolized for years? Hence the line in Spider-Man: Homecoming “I just wanted to be like you.”

Were any of the Tom-haters actually watching the Tobey Maguire movies? Remember when Peter introduced himself to Norman Osborn? He spoke admiringly of his research in the now heavily parodied “Something of a scientist myself” scene. So imagine if Norman hadn’t become the Green Goblin, but figured out Peter was Spider-Man. Don’t you think we’d have the same situation on our hands? Norman using Oscorp resources to help Peter be the best Spider-Man he can be? If Norman was good guy, then Spider-Man probably would have ended up looking more like this:

What about Spider-Man 2? Peter stated that Octavius was an idol of his, a scientific genius he looked up to. So let’s say Otto didn’t become Doc Ock, and he figured out Peter was Spider-Man. Don’t you think he would have helped Peter become… wait for it… a Superior Spider-Man? Like in the Marvel’s Spider-Man PS4 game? Octavius would have taken Peter under his wing, then Spider-Man would probably have looked something like this:

Even in The Amazing Spider-Man. Peter admired Dr. Connors, he read his book, he helped him with the cross-species genetics. So, let’s pretend Curt didn’t become the Lizard. Don’t you think the Tony/Peter relationship would play out with Connors and Peter? Then how would Spider-Man look? You guessed it, like this:

So the only difference between Tony and Norman, Otto, and Curt is that he didn’t become a super villain! So, Peter’s science genius idol in the MCU who figured out he was Spider-Man hooked him up with his best gear to help him become the best Spider-Man he can be. So what did he look like? Like this:

But now, with Tony gone, Peter is forced into the situation he was in the previous movies. Now he’s on his own, and you can tell even from his physicality alone in Far From Home that he’s already grown into a fully functional and independent superhero. So what if he used Stark tech to make his suit? He used Oscorp tech to make his web-shooters in Amazing Spider-Man. And so what if he gets help from some Avengers from time to time? Did he not go to Harry in Spider-Man 3 to get help fighting Mega-Sandman and Venom? Spider-Man in the MCU is just as much Spider-Man as the other two franchises. The thing is he now lives in a world where the Avengers exist, so those circumstances alone are bound to change the fundamentals of his heroics. But at the end of the day, it’s indisputable that whether you like Tobey, Tom, or Andrew, they all have one thing in common. They are all Spider-Man.
