The Punisher Returns
Frank Castle is back! Fresh off the heels of an ideological (and physical) battle with Daredevil, The Punisher is back and ready for revenge. This, coupled with the videos on the Facebook page, suggest that Punisher is teaming up with Micro to uncover some kind of conspiracy, one that led to his family’s death. The Punisher Facebook page keeps posting redacted statements, so that’s a fun touch. Maybe not so fun that they keep redacting the release date, but we know it’s 2017, and there’s only 3 months left, so it can’t be that far off.
The show looks to be plenty violent. I’m a bit of a softy, so I can’t say I’m looking forward to all the blood and guts, but if any show warrants it, it’s Punisher. You know, since he kills his bad guys. I am excited for the show though, and I’ve heard rumors that we’ll see the battle van! Remember that episode of the 90’s Spider-Man, when Punisher’s battle van did 80% of the fighting? Good times… I really want that battle van.
I also like that Micro is being utilized as the screen blurring, conspiracy theorist, computer guy. Micro is like, the OG guy in the chair, so it’ll be good to see what they do with him. Of course we’ve got Karen, who I don’t think is totally necessary, but Punisher’s wife is gone, so that kind of eliminates a female lead. I wonder if she’ll be okay mentally after the events of The Defenders.
Either way, the show looks good, and action packed, and I’m ready. One final note, I’m really glad he’s brandishing the skull, since we saw it for like, 30 seconds at end of Daredevil!
Marvel’s The Punisher hits Netflix on 00/00/2017

An Honest Review of Marvel’s Inhumans

So I leave town for a few days and I come back to see the web flooded with nothing but negativity for the Inhumans. Well, I happened to see it night one, and I, as a matter of fact, loved it! It wasn’t perfect, but it was definitely better than some of the really negative reviews out there would have you believe. So, here’s my honest to goodness review of Marvel’s Inhumans, as a true, through and through Marvel fan.
First off, I want to address the problem most people are having with the show being, well, a show instead of a movie. Get over it. Number one, making it a show gives us more time to focus on all of the characters, and there are 8 of them (yes, including Lockjaw). You can’t give 8 characters meaningful arcs in a 2 hour movie. Iron Man is about Iron Man, one character, easy. Inhumans is about a family. That’s a bit more complex. And secondly, they put the first two episodes out in theaters, so you still get your movie! So what are you complaining about???
So now let’s get into the actual show. The plot is exactly what we’d expect from an Inhumans story: Maximus initiates a coup to take over the throne of Attilan. It appears as if he’d been planning this for a while, considering his goons were already referring to him as king and Auron was on board. The spark to start the fire, it seems, came from the boy, Bronaja, who got Ulysses-like powers to see visions of the future. I’m surprised they didn’t just make him Ulysses, actually, that would have been cool. After telling Maximus he’d be attacked by snakes, and it actually coming to pass in the form of Medusa, he’s kind of pushed over the edge. With Triton supposedly dead, Gorgon going to look for him, and Black Bolt locked away thinking, Maximus seized the opportunity to take over Attilan. Crystal’s first instinct upon hearing the news was to protect her family, having Lockjaw take them all far away from the danger, to Earth. Thus began the Inhumans’ fight to survive in a world that’s foreign to them.
So let me list everything they did right, since no reviewer out there seems to want to do that. First off, they nailed the Inhumans character wise. Watching this show felt like reading an Inhumans comic. Maximus’s jealousy of his brother, resentment for being human, and desire for the throne; Gorgon being the strong dumb guy, and Karnak the tactical pessimist, all on point. Medusa translating for Black Bolt was the best, by establishing that she’s the only one who knows what he’s trying to say, they really solidify the relationship between the two. I nearly shed a tear at that heartwarming moment on Earth, when Medusa asked Black Bolt to let her know he’s alive and he placed the communicator to his heart. Some people questioned why these communicators would be vocal since Black Bolt can’t speak, which I admit is a pretty noticeable oversight. Maybe they were designed before he was king? And he always has Medusa by his side, so that probably was just never a bridge they had to cross.
Next is the display of powers. I don’t know why people were whining about the CG on Medusa’s hair, it looked fine, and it looked even better in action. It was made more than evident that Medusa’s strength and confidence is derived from the power her hair gives her. Which explains why she was so shattered when Maximus cut it. This makes her fight with Auron such a strong character moment. Her line “I am the Queen of Attilan. No one tells me what to do.” shows us that Medusa has come to terms with her new haircut, and is ready to fight back, with or without the hair. I will admit, being that Medusa is my favorite Inhuman, it was sad to see the hair go so soon. But I like Medusa because she’s ruthless, and just as strong a leader as, if not more so than Black Bolt.Back to the topic of powers, Gorgon was shown to be the powerhouse, and undoubtedly so. One stomp caused some pretty massive damage, and he’s clearly no stranger to combat, considering he called Maximus out. I will say I’m not too optimistic about a bunch of Hawaiian surfer bros taking on an Inhuman army to defend their beach. You know, because the Inhumans have powers, and they have surfboards, but hey, that’s their decision. Karnak’s powers were probably the best part of the show. The way he literally mapped out a scenario in his head that ended with his death, then went back and redid it, emerging victorious that time was pretty cool. It’s a shame he hit his head and now his powers are on the fritz, but let’s hope he can fix that in time to kick more butt. I will say this though: Guy whose power is finding the weak point in everything grabs onto the weakest point of a mountain he’s descending… Yeah, didn’t plot out that scenario, did ya buddy?
Crystal didn’t have a lot to do, but the way she exploded Auron’s food tray demonstrated just a taste of her power. Crystal is probably the most powerful of all the Inhumans, barring Black Bolt, since she can control the elements. But her youth and naivety will probably prevent her from reaching maximum power until a moment of extreme pressure. I like that Crystal is so sweet and innocent, she’s not a warrior, and she just wants to keep her family safe. But all of her decisions result in not so optimal outcomes, because she’s childish, and doesn’t fully comprehend situations. All she wants to do is play with Lockjaw, and can we really fault her for that? Lockjaw, by the way, was great. Animation was on point and he was utilized just enough to be satisfying. I also think the teleporting effect is very cool, how he sort of disintegrates and reforms. Very cool indeed.
Overall, story, characters, and powers, were all great. I have a few gripes, however, as I mentioned earlier, it’s not perfect, but what is? First off, I want to see more Triton! We didn’t even get to really see what he can do, and he got written off so quick. I want him back! Another thing is that they kind of skimped on the action. This is very much a character story, and I do appreciate that, but I do feel the IMAX event should have had a bit more hands being thrown. Black Bolt got a good fight scene, until he was introduced to a taser, and I did like the fight with Medusa and Auron. Other than that, the only problem I have is that I want more! The Inhumans were left broken, vulnerable, in a world they don’t know, and Maximus has taken over the throne, holding Crystal and Lockjaw hostage. This seems like it’s going to be a really fun story, and I for one can’t wait to see the rest.So that’s an honest review, from a fan of these characters, and not some random know-nothing reviewer that’s probably never picked up a comic a day in his life, or someone that’s salty because Inhumans are ‘replacing’ X-Men or whatever. 10 Best Moments in Marvel’s The Defenders

So it’s been over a week, and I’m sure that you all have had a chance to watch The Defenders by now! If you haven’t, well then, what are you doing here!? Go finish! Shoo! Shoo! But for those of you who have, I’m going to break down what are, in my opinion, wait for it… the 10 best moments in The Defenders! Yay! Alright, enough buildup, here we go! Oh, and case you haven’t realized by now, SPOILER WARNING!

10: The Restaurant
When The Avengers came out, some of the best scenes involved the interactions of characters we’d seen separately for 4 years across five different movies come together for the first time. How would Cap react to the modern age, or Iron Man to Norse Gods? What we get in the restaurant scenes of The Defenders asks and answers those same questions.
I have to say, the heroes coming together, turning the restaurant into a temporary base of operations and the conversation that followed was just what I wanted from all of these clashing personalities. The group being creeped out by Daredevil’s powers, Iron Fist’s amazement at how strong Jessica is and how he attempted to form them into a super team. My favorite moment was when Jessica called Matt out on being Daredevil, and ultimately forced him to join the group. My one concern was that Stick would ruin the scene, but luckily he only enhanced it, and provided some emotional weight for Matt.

9: Jessica Jones MVP Part 1
Speaking of the restaurant, my next best moment is where Alexandra corners our heroes and sics Elektra on them. And just as Elektra is about to (try to) cut them to pieces, BOOM! Jessica slides the car through the window and rejoins the group, Chinese Drive Through (that’s the name of the song in that moment, look it up) heroically blaring behind her. Jessica Jones, MVP!

8: Misty Knight Loses Her Arm
Okay, so it’s not a very happy moment, but there are certain reasons I like this. One, it leads to what we all have wanted since Misty was introduced, the bionic arm! We got a glimpse in the Season 2 photo that was put out yesterday, and man does it look great!
The next reason I love this scene is because, for seemingly the first time, Misty did something heroic. All throughout Luke Cage and even The Defenders, it’s hard to root for Misty because she’s always arresting and interrogating the heroes, who we’re supposed to be rooting for. So when she jumps in the way of Bakuto’s blade to protect Claire, for the first time I felt that Misty was a hero.

7: The Immortal Iron Fist
This is more like two moments in one, but when Danny unleashed the full power of the Iron Fist, it was freaking awesome! In the scene where he’s fighting the team off from taking him captive and in the mine where Luke tells him to “Light it up”. Seeing such raw power from the Iron Fist is a sight to behold, since he only had, like, one big power move in the entirety of his own show.

6: Shou-Lao
Speaking of Iron Fist, let’s talk about Shou-Lao! Or, at least it was implied that was Shou-Lao’s skeleton, I’m still unclear on that. But the moment where the camera pans out, and we see the skeleton posed in the same position as the tattoo on Danny’s chest, well, that was just so cool. And it was so mean that the Hand was taking his bones to make ‘the substance’! They should be ashamed of themselves!

5: Defenders v.s The 3 Fingers of the Hand
So, at this point Sowande had already been decapitated and Alexandra had been impaled. Which left us with Gao, Bakuto, and Murakami. Now I already didn’t like any of these guys, which a credit to the actors, so I was waiting for them to get their butts handed to them. So when Daredevil, Luke, and Jessica meet them in that parking garage for a smack down super slam, I was very pleased. Number one, they introed like bosses, and then the actual fight was great! Daredevil throwing down with straight up ninjas, Luke and Jessica pulling combo moves on Gao, that Colleen Wing assist at the end. And it didn’t hurt that the fight was paralleled with Elektra throwing hands with Iron Fist!

4: Luke Cage v.s Iron Fist
“Just remember, you started this.” What a scene. The first time we get to see the Heroes for Hire share the screen, and they throw down in a very satisfying brawl! I love how Iron Fist kept coming at Luke, who seemed to genuinely not care as he tossed poor Danny from wall to wall. I felt bad watching Danny try his hardest, whipping out all of his Kung-Fu mastery, and Luke just taking it. But when he busted out the Iron Fist, phew, you bet Luke was heated! I would have loved to see that outcome, had the cops not shown up. But nonetheless, great fight.

3: Jessica Jones MVP Part 2
I’m a sucker for pure feats of heroism. Iron Man saving all those people from Air Force One, Spider-Man lifting a building off of himself, Nick Fury saving FitzSimmons, heck, even Flash running up into that time vortex in the end of season 1. I doubt many will disagree with me when I say that the single most heroic moment in the show was Jessica holding that elevator after the cable snapped. Full disclosure, Jessica Jones was my least favorite of the Netflix MCU shows, but this moment here was simply breathtaking! Jessica Jones MVP! Again!

2: Daredevil Returns
Just as I love acts of heroism, I hate it when heroes quit. They bum around the city, 90% with an unkempt goatee, while they grit their teeth and clench their fists as cop cars drive by, wishing they could do something about it, but they can’t because they’re quitters. So when Matt finally decided to be Daredevil again, I was so happy. And I’m not talking about stopping those muggers after the earthquake, I mean when Murakami was about stab the crap out of Jessica and straight up Daredevil swoops in to save the day. Trish’s astonishment at the Devil of Hell’s Kitchen personally saving her friends was priceless. And the scene where he interrogated Sowande was great, making Daredevil the right amount of tough and terrifying. Daredevil is my favorite of the Netflix MCU shows, so this was a great moment for me.

1: Battle in Midland Circle
Was there any doubt this was number one? All four Defenders throwing down in a hallway, Elektra looking all scary and fighting like a boss, Luke Cage and Iron Fist teaming up. I mean, Iron Fist hiding behind Luke Cage as he took on gunfire was flat out comic book TV show goals! I’ve lost count of how many times I watched it, and as a matter of fact, I’m gonna stop talking about it and just go watch it again.
So what was your top 10? Do you agree with mine? Comment below! The Defenders was great, and I can’t wait until they return!

The Inhumans Strike a Pose!
Got some hot new #Inhumans posters! It’s so close I can taste it! One comment, however, I probably would have switched Crystal and Karnak’s poses. She’s in sort of a Kung-Fu pose, which I think would suit Karnak better, as he’s literally just standing there. Otherwise, these look awesome! But wait… where’s the Lockjaw poster!?
EDIT: There he is!

Inhumans: The Royal Family
I’m so ready for this show! In this short trailer, we meet our favorite Inhumans and learn their roles in Attilan as the guardian (Gorgan), the visionary (Karnak), the assassin (Auran), the operative (Triton), the princess (Crystal), the queen (Medusa), the king (Black Bolt), and the revolutionary (Maximus). I am, however, just a tad disappointed, that Maximus wasn’t listed as ‘The Mad’, missed opportunity if you ask me. We get more of the the Royal Family in action, showing off Medusa’s awesome hair and Crystal using her powers! Short, sweet, probably just here to let us know tickets are on sale for the IMAX screening on September 1. I can’t wait! What do you guys think about the Inhumans so far? I’ve seen a lot of negativity, but the more Marvel releases, it seems like people are coming on board.

Marvel’s Spider-Man is Almost Here!

The new show is nearly here! On the 19th, we can prepare to be amazed once more by everyone’s favorite Wall Crawler, Spider-Man! I will be doing a podcast for members and giving away some cool prizes, so keep an eye out! In the meantime, we’ve got 3, count ’em, 3 new featurettes, and an interview on Marvel.com I’ll link.
First up we’ve got Patton Oswald going over what it’s like for him to voice Uncle Ben. I thought this was strange casting at first, but now that I can see it, it kind of fits. I don’t think we heard Uncle Ben at all during Ultimate, so I’m sure I’ll really appreciate these flashback scenes. Again, though, perfect time for Uncle Ben would have been in those origin shorts, but hey, I’m not judging.
This one goes over the cast of the show, and I like that they’re widening Peter’s friend pool to include all of the would-be Spiders (although we glimpse Miles in costume here! Yay!) I don’t know if he and Gwen are going to have a relationship, but the interview says they’re focusing less on romance and more on friendship, so I guess it’ll take some time if they do go that route. I really want to see Mary Jane though! Where is she! The main takeaway from this, however, is that Josh freaking Keaton is back! And playing Norman Osborn (no doubt using his evil CEO voice from Spider-Man: Edge of Time)! It must be weird for him, being in a Spider-Man show again and not being Spider-Man, but I’m sure he’ll be fine. Also, that looked like Tony Stark talking to Max Modell (thinking emoji). And did I already mention Miles in costume? Yay!
I don’t think Joe Quesada’s said Peter Parker more in his life. This video is basically saying “Hey, did you not like Ultimate Spider-Man because there was no Peter Parker narrative? Well here, now shut up.” I like that we’re gonna focus back up on Peter, it’s refreshing and honestly, just what everyone has been wanting since Spectacular kicked it.
Lastly, there’s this interview: https://news.marvel.com/tv/71599/marvels-spider-man-will-offer-plenty-spidey-fans-enjoy/
It offers up a lot of good info, but I think the key point to pull from here is the bit about story arcs, and how they’re going to set up things to pay off later down the line. That’s something we’ve been missing for the past five years in Ultimate. Story arcs were usually the first and last two episodes of the season, the Spider-Verse events aside, and it really made it so that the gravity of the consequences in each episode lost their weight by the end. So hearing that we’re going to be getting arcs, you know, like in an actual comic book, makes me pretty happy.
What do you guys think? Are you excited for this show? Let me know in the comments! And make sure to tune in Saturday, August 19th (7:00-8:00 AM EDT), on Disney XD.

Marvel’s Spider-Man, Origin Part 2-6 Breakdown
I said I’d be back when all 6 parts of Spider-Man’s origin were out, and here we are! Let’s break this thing down, piece by piece, and see what we’re in for with this new show! I’m starting on Part 2, if you missed my breakdown of Part 1, click here. Alright, here we go!
So we pick up right after Peter got bit in part one, and he’s discovering his powers. It’s kind of refreshing to see the power discovery/origin phase again, since all the animated series to this point have glossed over it if you really think about it. They all had flashback episodes, but for the first time in a Spider-Man cartoon, I feel like we’re starting from the beginning with Peter and following him on his journey. I also like that Peter’s processing his powers with the 5 steps of the scientific method (that I’m sure we all learned in middle school). This keeps true to his scientific nature and gives this version of Peter almost an endearing personality about him.
This episode is the Observation phase, and it’s a nice touch to have Peter recording his thoughts; talking to himself has always been a Spider-Man staple. I like the Raimi-trilogy moment where he’s hiding from an Osborn on the ceiling, and let’s not forget that part straight out of the comics where he flips to avoid a car and lands on the wall. And that Spider-Sense effect is awesome, be it a bit intrusive. It was subtler in previous iterations, but at least we’re clear on when it goes off.
Next we get to the Hypothesis stage. Again, this recording his thoughts shtick they’ve got going is great, and the parkour/Parker bit was a nice face palm nerd joke only Peter would make (along with his baseball touchdown). I would, however, like to take a moment to point out the quip about his web shooters, how if they told time and played music he’d make a fortune. Not only is that legitimately funny, but it’s subtle, which is something we haven’t had in a while from the Disney XD Marvel shows. It’s smart humor, not fart humor, and with that, I think this show can go far. The rest is Peter making shapes and objects with his web shooters, a bit Amazing Spider-Man world in Shattered Dimensions if you ask me, but I guess it takes Peter’s ingenuity a step further, so I won’t complain. And the web slinging bit at the end, pure heart eye emoji joy.
We now reach Prediction (smart throwing the psychic in there, though I wish it was Madame Web!) This is mainly Peter coming up with a name and a costume, which totally brought me back to me trying to (unsuccessfully) make my own homemade Spider-Man costume! That little Ben Reilly nod was cool, and hey, we hear Aunt May! Still haven’t seen her, or Uncle Ben, which is a bit strange, but they’re choosing to focus on Peter, so I guess it’s fine.
The Experimentation part is my favorite of these origin bits. It’s basically a love letter to Raimi’s first Spider-Man movie (I mean, Bonesaw Mcgee! Come on!), and I’m all for it! It’s formatted like an episode of the show they made up “So You Want to be a Wrestler”, with backstage interviews, an announcer, and the video intros, which is unique and different. This version of Peter continues to win me over with his lack of sports knowledge and insistence on being a nerd no matter his situation. And the actual match with Bonesaw was cool peek at what the action in this show is going to be like. Peter throwing quips while coming up with creative and agile ways to take down his enemies. It’s perfect, it’s Spider-Man. Now of course, Peter lets the burglar go, and we know that won’t end well, but like I said, this was a 5 minute flashback to Spider-Man 1, and made me almost nostalgic in a way. And hey, let’s not forget about good old Stan Lee’s cameo!
The last part, appropriately titled Conclusion, is the Uncle Ben portion. Strange, since, again, we haven’t seen Uncle to this point, so the emotional impact isn’t as strong, but kids will be watching, so I don’t expect them to pack it on. And Peter’s reaction is more than enough to sell it. I can’t understate, however, how much I love, love, love the opening to this. Peter stating that the trophy is made of three kinds of metal, then asking “You know else is made up of three different kinds of metal?” And boom! It’s an inspired moment, and one that drives home the point while punching you in the gut. The rest is by the numbers, Peter corners Uncle Ben’s killer, full of rage, discovers it’s his fault, and accepts that with great power comes great responsibility. Peter’s anger and then anguish at what he did is well represented, and helps me really connect to Peter. I actually believe why he wants to be Spider-Man in the end.
I think that this six-part origin was necessary, so that when we’re thrown into Peter’s adventures as the wall crawler, we now care about who he is underneath. I find that the best Spider-Man stories are when I’m rooting for Peter, even when he’s wearing the mask. Ultimate took a step back from the Peter Parker aspect, which I think cost the show dearly, and is the reason no one really got into it. But this show seems to be getting back to basics, the reason we all love Spider-Man in the first place, and that’s because when he’s plain old Peter Parker, he one of us. I’m really excited, and everything I’ve seen of this show only gives me more hope. Fingers crossed that this is the Spider-Man show that’ll go down in history as the best!

Brand New Defenders Trailer #SDCC
A new Defenders trailer is here right of Comic Con! And this time we get a clearer picture of what’s going to bring our street-level heroes together. Sigourney Weaver is brainwashing a newly revived Elektra into taking her position in the Hand, which we learned she was destined for in Daredevil season 2. I really like the shock in Matt’s voice when he realizes she’s alive, and it looks like he’s going to attempt to connect with her (we’ll see how that turns out).
I think it’s also worth noting the chemistry between all of these guys. Aside from Luke and Jessica, we haven’t really seen any of them together. And even that has a complication since the last thing Luke said to Jessica (of his own free will, aka un-Kilgraved) was calling her a piece of poo. Which wasn’t cool Luke. But that tension was illustrated, even in a short moment, with Luke calling after Jessica as she walks away from him, right when Sigourney suggests that their alliance is temporary.

But the nice little comedic interactions between them are wonderful, and Jessica’s cynical attitude is a great foil to all of them. The way she discounts Danny’s energy as being Chi and makes fun of Daredevil’s costume is welcome levity in an otherwise dark corner of the MCU. And I have to admit, I felt a little sorry for Matt when Luke didn’t want a hug! Not cool Luke!
Also, it looks like everyone from Foggy to Patsy, and Stick to Bakudo are back to play supporting roles, and I think that’s actually an advantage the shows have over the movies. Think of it this way, a movie is only so long, so when the first Avengers happened, and everyone was asking “Where’s Rhodey?” and “Why isn’t Jane Foster there?”, the answer is simply there wasn’t enough time to get them all in. But in a show, you can have Colleen Wing in one episode and Misty Knight in the next. I think it’s a rewarding payoff for five seasons of following not just the heroes, but their amazing friends as well.
The Defenders is coming to Netflix August 18. Until then, this fun little New York Bulletin website should curb your anticipation a bit: http://nybulletin.com/

New Inhumans Trailers #SDCC
Comic Con hit us yesterday with a brand new trailer for Inhumans! This time we get to finally see Medusa’s hair! And today we learned from Marvel Live that Auran is in the show (And apparently a danger to bus drivers everywhere!) I was wondering also why Triton was on Earth, but it looks like he’s been deployed to find all the new Inhumans (or Nuhumans as it were) that sprung up as a result of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. and the fish oil incident. And speaking of S.H.I.E.L.D., we got a glimpse in the first trailer, but now we clearly see the alien writing that led the team to Afterlife! Maybe these are coordinates to Attilan. Either way, it’s good to see that kind of consistency with these shows. One thing I’m embarrassed to admit, however, is that I didn’t know Maximus was a human! I always thought his Inhuman power was that he was really smart since he’s always inventing things, but this really explains his issues. And boy does this guy have issues! Another cool thing is seeing how Karnak’s power works, that blue flash when hits the weak points is a stroke of genius! Oh, and let’s not forget Lockjaw! This show looks great, and the first two episodes release in IMAX September 1.
